Season
opener changed to Aug. 29 for statewide telecast
Florida International University saw an opportunity
it couldnt miss and moved its opening day game up to Thursday,
August 29.
The game, which
will still be played against St. Peters College of New Jersey,
will take place two days early in order to benefit from a live telecast
on Sunshine Network.
The opportunity
to have our first game televised around the state and nationally
via satellite goes a long way toward not only highlighting our new
venture with football but will also allow us to feature the entire
university, said Athletic Director Rick Mello. Not only
that, but this new date puts the football spotlight directly on
us whereas before, if the game was on Saturday, we would have been
competing for fan and media attention.
Sunshine Network
is Floridas largest and leading 24-hour regional sports network
with 5.7 million homes and more than
15 teams/properties under contract, including the Orlando Magic,
Miami Heat, Tampa Bay Lightning, Miami Dolphins, Tampa Bay Buccaneers,
Jacksonville Jaguars, FSU, Florida, UCF, ACC, and the SEC.
We look
forward to assisting FIU in providing statewide exposure for their
football program under former Miami Dolphin, Coach Don Strock, and
showcasing what will be a memorable and historic event in the schools
history, said Dana Stites, Sunshine Networks director
of programming.
Although FIUs
first game will now be played two days earlier, FIUs Alumni
Association and Golden Panther Club will still have their tents
set up for members. Students will also be organizing events, giveaways
and will have food and refreshments for the fans.
For more information
on the football program or to order season tickets, call 305-348-GAME
or 1-866-FIU-GAME or visit www.football.fiu.edu.
