Gregory Martin
Director of FIU’s
Marching Band

FIU toots its own horn
Marching band director hired

When the FIU football team takes to the field in the fall of 2002, there will be a full marching band in the stands to cheer it on. The job of assembling and directing the FIU Marching Band has gone to Mark Gregory Martin.

Martin, will begin the program from scratch, building a repertoire and recruiting musicians when he begins his duties at FIU in August.

Formerly an assistant director of the Longhorn Band at the University of Texas – Austin (UT), one of the most celebrated bands in the nation, Martin comes to FIU with 23 years of conducting experience.

“Greg is full of energy and enthusiasm, and that’s just what we need at the School of Music to start such an important program,” said School of Music Director Fred Kaufman. “It will be a pleasure to work with Greg and to watch our band play at the first FIU football game.”

Martin, 45, holds a master of Musical Arts degree in Wind Conducting from James Madison University and is in the process of completing a doctorate of Musical Arts degree in Wind Conducting from UT. He has also served as a lecturer in its School of Music.

Prior to joining the UT staff, Martin spent 14 years in the Florida and Virginia public school systems and taught at James Madison University. He has also served as a Color Guard Instructor and Marching Caption Head.

“I have always wanted to start a program,” said Martin. “FIU has given me the opportunity to do that in a vast cultural community that has a unique style and an energy level that you don’t come across too often. FIU is ripe and ready for a top-notch marching band, and I look forward to providing that for the school and the community.”

Martin plans to create a band that incorporates the Hispanic culture, as well as the art deco history of South Florida.

STROCKTALK :::::::::: By DON STROCK

I put on my hard hat yesterday and took a tour of our new field house – it is looking great! In the next few weeks the finishing touches will be placed on the structure, and we should be ready to move in by the time our student athletes start classes on August 27.
At the same time, our field is going to be completely redone. We are going to have one of the most high tech playing surfaces in the nation and certainly in the southeast.
So things are really falling into place.
I hope to see you at our scrimmages this fall starting on Saturday, September 29.
